Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue | Mount Airy MD

Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue is a 501(c)(3) equine welfare organization based in Mount Airy, Maryland, dedicated to saving draft and draft-cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect. Founded in 2005, it combines rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming with a lifelong commitment to each horse’s safety and care. On its 400-acre facility, a trained team of animal care technicians works alongside an on-staff veterinarian to assess horses, create individualized care plans, and support their recovery.

The organization reports caring for more than 300 horses each year and has placed over 1,500 in adoptive homes. Horses of varied ages and abilities are available for adoption or sponsorship, including some with special needs; resident horses also receive sanctuary care. Gentle Giants offers volunteer opportunities, horse sponsorships, guardian support for vulnerable horses, farm tours, educational outreach, and events.

Its programs include Operation GELD, horse rehoming, and technical large-animal rescue. Donations and merchandise purchases help fund horse care, while memberships and other support options enable the organization’s work to continue
