GenTree

GenTree is a European research project focused on improving the management and sustainable use of forest genetic resources. Its work supports the forestry sector by developing knowledge, methods and practical tools to help forests adapt to changing environmental conditions and remain genetically diverse. The project studies how genetics and the environment shape tree adaptation, and quantifies key processes that affect genomic diversity. It also develops recommendations for adaptive forest management and policy instruments, alongside strategies for sampling trees and conserving forest genetic resources dynamically.

GenTree focuses on important tree species in Europe and explores ways to broaden the range of genetic resources used in breeding programmes. It promotes the use of diversified forest reproductive material and shares project findings through peer-reviewed articles, books, reports, videos, public-awareness materials and newsletters. The website provides information about project partners, stakeholders, advisory experts, research activities, sampling sites, publications and events. By connecting research with forestry practice and policy, GenTree aims to help ensure that Europe’s forest resources are managed sustainably and are better equipped to respond to environmental change.
