Le GEOB, or Groupes d’Études Ornithologiques du Béarn, is a bird-conservation association focused on improving knowledge of the birds and habitats of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, particularly Béarn, and contributing to their protection. Its work brings together volunteer and professional ornithologists to monitor species, support collective conservation initiatives, and share information through educational resources and publications.
Since 1986, a central activity has been monitoring the breeding of the Egyptian Vulture in Béarn as part of the National Action Plan led by DREAL Aquitaine. From March to September, the team observes 14 sites across the Ossau, Aspe, Lourdioos, and Barétous valleys, following the birds from their return from Africa through nesting, incubation, chick-rearing, and departure. The association also contributes to monitoring other species and habitats, including Red Kites, Tengmalm’s Owls, and waterbirds counted through the international Wetlands programme.
The GEOB website offers information on these monitoring projects, bird identification, a library of guides and reading, the association’s La Marie Blanque publications, and a gallery featuring local raptors and other birds.
