The UNESCO Global Geopark of Lavreotiki is a 262-square-kilometre area in Greece, recognised for its rich geological, environmental and cultural heritage. Its landscape includes more than 40 geosites and around 1,000 historic mining galleries and shafts, reflecting the region’s mineral wealth and long relationship with mining. The geopark works to protect its natural features, promote environmental awareness and education, support responsible land-use planning, and encourage sustainable local economic activity.

Its activities connect visitors and communities with the area through geotrails, guided tours, educational excursions, information centres, maps, publications, presentations and seminars. The geopark also supports scientific research, particularly collaboration with universities and research centres, and promotes geotourism and locally connected businesses and products. Cultural initiatives highlight Lavreotiki’s history, including the influence of mining on economic and technological development, working life and the environment. Residents, producers, social organisations, researchers and visitors are invited to take part in education, research, geotourism and cultural projects. As a member of UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network, the geopark promotes Lavreotiki locally and internationally.
