The George Padmore Institute (GPI) is an esteemed brand established in 1991, evolving from the community surrounding New Beacon Books, Britain's pioneering black publisher and bookshop, and its visionary founder John La Rose. As an archive, educational research, and information center, GPI houses an extensive collection of materials and documents pertaining to post-war black communities in Britain and continental Europe, with a focus on Caribbean, African, and Asian descent. The Institute is committed to organizing and preserving these valuable archives to ensure accessibility to individuals, researchers, students, and schools interested in the economic, social, and cultural history of black British communities.
GPI also offers educational and cultural activities such as conferences, courses, seminars, talks, and readings. Moreover, they contribute to the literary world by publishing books and other materials. Located at 76 Stroud Green Road, Finsbury Park, London, GPI continues the legacy of George Padmore, a prominent Pan-Africanist and writer, who envisioned a world based on equality, solidarity, and hope.
Please note that while GPI is named after George Padmore, they do not house his archive collections. Additionally, the Institute honors the influential figure of John La Rose, a poet, essayist, filmmaker, and cultural activist. GPI's staff and trustees are dedicated professionals, including an archivist, office manager, outreach and communications officer, chair, vice-chair, and other esteemed individuals with remarkable backgrounds
