About Georgian Bay Geopark
Georgian Bay Geopark is a grassroots, community-led initiative exploring the creation of a UNESCO Global Geopark for Georgian Bay and the North Channel in Canada. It aims to bring attention to the region’s internationally significant geological heritage and the connections between its landscapes, ecosystems, cultures, and communities. The initiative sees the UNESCO Geopark framework as a way to advance protection, education, and sustainable economic development, while building a shared understanding of the region’s past and future.
Its central learning and storytelling program, DEEP TIME, presents the region through eight geological zones, spanning billions of years of Earth history and including ancient rocks, mountain-building, fossil-rich limestone, glacial landscapes, and Indigenous histories. The website offers information about these zones, educational learning modules, geospatial planning resources, and opportunities to take part in community surveys and discussions. It also features geotourism information and an adventure bike tour. Georgian Bay Geopark is in an exploratory phase, sharing research and building partnerships while inviting residents, visitors, municipalities, and First Nations to help shape an open, collaborative conversation about the region’s future.
