GERALD MCCARTHY

Gerald McCarthy is an author and former head of the Virginia Environmental Endowment, whose work explores how practical leadership and collaboration can advance environmental protection. His book, Blueprint for Going Green, tells the story of how funds from the 1977 Kepone water pollution settlement helped transform Virginia’s approach to environmental affairs. The account highlights the role of inspired thinking, grassroots commitment, and efforts to bring opposing parties together, presenting a model of incremental progress with significance beyond the state.

Rather than focusing solely on conflict and advocacy, McCarthy examines how lasting environmental protections can be built through cooperation, reason, and civic engagement. The book has been recognized by writers and scholars for its contribution to understanding state-level environmental history and the development of enduring conservation efforts.
