About Germanic Lexicon Project
The Germanic Lexicon Project, initiated by linguist Sean Crist between 1999 and 2006, is a pioneering effort in historical Germanic linguistics aimed at digitizing copyright-expired dictionaries. The project leverages crowdsourcing techniques to allow volunteers to correct OCR errors in historical texts, significantly enhancing the accuracy of entries from major dictionaries like Bosworth/Toller and Cleasby/Vigfusson. Despite facing challenges in securing funding for continued expansion and research, the project's early successes included substantial contributions from the public, which fostered a collaborative spirit.
In 2006, Crist pivoted to a career in Natural Language Processing, while Ondrej Tichy of Charles University took over the project’s ongoing maintenance. The Germanic Lexicon Project is not just an academic endeavor; it represents the intersection of technology and linguistics, providing invaluable free data to researchers and enthusiasts alike. As of July 2020, the project has been relocated to a new server and continues to hope for future development, reflecting Crist's enduring passion for historical linguistics
