Geschichtswerkstatt Achim

Geschichtswerkstatt Achim is a local history association based in Achim, Germany, established in 1986. Working under the motto “history from below” and “dig where you stand,” it explores the town’s past through the experiences of the people who lived it. Its work spans more than a thousand years of local history, from earlier settlement and social life to events and changes up to the present.

The association researches and documents Achim and its surrounding districts, placing local stories in their wider social, economic and historical context. Its subjects include medieval and modern social history, the workers’ and trade-union movements, the Nazi era, the postwar period, municipal changes and urban renewal. Geschichtswerkstatt Achim shares its findings through publications, including an annual history booklet, and presents regional-history displays in the Clüverhaus. It also holds public meetings and events, maintains a library available by appointment, and welcomes visitors and interested residents. Members collaborate with local archives, the city and other history groups, encouraging people to investigate and understand their own history.
