The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) is a public agency established in 1979 to promote, facilitate, monitor, and regulate the sustainable use of Guyana’s mineral resources, including petroleum. It evolved from the Department of Geological Surveys and Mines and serves the mining and petroleum sectors, stakeholders, and investors. Its work is guided by values including integrity, accountability, fairness, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence.
GGMC’s technical divisions cover Geological Services, Mines, Environment, Petroleum, and Land Management. The Commission provides geological research and data, laboratory services, mapping, museum resources, and guidance on exporting geological samples. It administers mining and prospecting licences, permits, quarry licences, land management processes, and related applications and renewals. Additional services include property and claim rental tools, application-status searches, environmental permissions, and information on regulations. GGMC also publishes forms, documents, reports, and mineral production data, and provides mining education through the Guyana Mining School. As Guyana’s AML/CFT Supervisory Authority for valuable mineral trading, it works to support legal compliance and responsible resource management.
