About Ghana Museums
The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) serves as the legal custodian of Ghana's rich material cultural heritage, both movable and immovable. Established in March 1957, just before Ghana's independence, the GMMB emerged from the merger of the National Museum of the Gold Coast's interim council and the Monuments and Relics Commission. The Board operates under Act 387 of 1969, reinforced by the Executive Instrument (E.I.) 29 of 1973, and traces its roots to an Ethnographic Museum founded at Achimota College in 1929.
GMMB oversees a variety of museums, including the National Museum, Museum of Science & Technology, and several regional museums, such as the Cape Coast Castle Museum and the Elmina Castle Museum. Additionally, it manages UNESCO World Heritage sites, including significant forts and castles along with traditional Asante buildings. Through its efforts, GMMB actively promotes the conservation, study, and appreciation of Ghana's historical treasures while contributing to cultural education and heritage preservation initiatives.
