About GGGI
GGGI, or the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, is an influential alliance that was launched in September 2015. It is dedicated to combatting the widespread issue of lost, abandoned, and discarded fishing gear, commonly known as ghost gear. Backed by cutting-edge science and technology, GGGI stands out as the world's largest cross-sectoral alliance in this domain.
What sets GGGI apart is the diverse range of participants it brings together, including the fishing industry, private sector, academia, governments, and non-governmental organizations. Each participant plays a crucial role in tackling ghost gear's detrimental impact on aquatic ecosystems, human health and livelihoods, and the wellbeing of aquatic life. GGGI's strategic approach revolves around three key aims: enhancing the health of aquatic ecosystems, safeguarding human health and livelihoods, and protecting aquatic life from harm.
To accomplish these goals, GGGI operates globally and locally across three core work streams: building evidence, defining best practices and informing policy, and catalyzing and replicating solutions. With their steadfast commitment and collaborative efforts, GGGI is championing the cause of sustainability and making significant strides in preserving our oceans and marine biodiversity
