About Gila River
The Gila River Indian Community is an Indian reservation located in Arizona, adjacent to the south side of Phoenix. Established in 1859 and formally recognized by Congress in 1939, this vibrant community is home to members of the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and Pee-Posh (Maricopa) tribes. With a land area of 583.
749 sq mi (1,511. 902 km²) and a population of 11,257 according to the 2000 Census, it encompasses seven districts along the Gila River. The Gila River Indian Community offers a wide range of products and services to its residents.
These include the Aji Spa & Salon, Gila River Resorts & Casinos, Gila River Indian Community Utility Authority, Gila River Sand & Gravel Corp., Gila River Telecommunications Inc., the HuHuGam Heritage Center, Kai Restaurant, Koli Equestrian Center, Ko'Sin Restaurant, Lone Butte Development Corp., Pima Leasing & Financing Corp., Rawhide, Sheraton Wildhorse Pass Resort & Spa, Toka Sticks Golf Club, Whirlwind Golf Club, Wild Horse Pass Development Authority, Native Technology Solutions (NTS), Alluvion Communications, and Gila River Broadcasting Corporation (GRBC). In addition to these enterprises, the Gila River Indian Community operates its own telecom company, electric utility, industrial park, and healthcare clinic. They also publish a monthly newspaper to keep the community informed.
