Gili Eco Trust has grown and expanded its activities from marine conservation to waste management and sustainable eco tourism. From 2004, Gili Eco Trust started the Biorock project, creating artificial reefs and restoring the natural habitat of thousands of fish in previously destroyed areas of reef. Gili Eco Trust also supervises the waste management on Gili Trawangan from collection to processing recyclable materials and transporting them off the island. Additionally, there is a lot going on with smaller eco-projects which you can read more about on our website ( http://giliecotrust.com/ ), such as working horse healthcare clinics and educational workshops for kids, tourists and hospitality staff.

About Gili Eco Trust
Gili Eco Trust is a non-profit organization based in the Gili Islands of Indonesia, dedicated to protecting the environment and creating sustainable islands for everyone to enjoy. Founded in 2002, the organization's initial focus was on protecting the coral reefs around the Gili islands from destructive fishing practices such as dynamite and cyanide fishing. Over the years, their activities have expanded to include waste management and sustainable eco-tourism initiatives.
One of their notable projects is the Biorock project, which involves creating artificial reefs and restoring the natural habitat of thousands of fish in previously destroyed and overfished areas of the reef. They also support waste collection and management efforts on Gili Trawangan, making daily waste collections, processing recyclable materials, and promoting effective trash separation for maximum recycling.
The organization's mission is to promote ecotourism, restore coral reefs, replenish fish populations, reduce waste, and enhance the livelihoods of the local community. They have set goals such as creating coral nurseries, installing moorings to eliminate anchor use, promoting effective trash separation strategies, and implementing a zero-waste-to-landfill approach. Gili Eco Trust also aims to educate and empower businesses and the local community through their Eco Rangers program.
Despite facing challenges like limited resources and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism, Gili Eco Trust remains committed to their mission. They see opportunities in the growing desire for eco-friendly destinations and collaborations with initiatives supported by volunteers and tourists. By joining forces with Gili Eco Trust, individuals can contribute to the protection of the environment and the creation of sustainable islands for future generations to enjoy.
