The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program helps American undergraduate students with high financial need study or intern abroad through merit-based scholarships. A program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, it is funded by the U.S. Government and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Established in 2001 and named for the late Congressman Benjamin A. Gilman, the program has supported students from institutions across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Its scholarships have enabled participants to pursue international study and internships in more than 170 countries, building an alumni network of over 50,000.
Alongside its core scholarship, the program offers the Gilman-McCain Scholarship for eligible applicants, a Critical Need Language Award for students studying languages important to national security, and a STEM Supplemental Award for students undertaking related coursework or internships abroad. The website provides application guidance, eligibility and selection information, deadlines, and resources for applicants, advisors, recipients, and alumni.
