GIMA-HA

GIMA-HA Shotokan-Ryu Deutschland is the official German representative of the GIMA-HA Shotokan-Ryu Karatedo Association in Japan. Named after Makoto Gima, a student and close associate of Gichin Funakoshi, the association carries forward a traditional approach to Shotokan karate. It views karate as a historically developed system of self-defense that remains relevant for training in modern society.

The organization emphasizes thoughtful, appropriate interpretation of inherited principles and seeks to uphold their credibility. At the same time, it does not claim that its approach is the only valid one and remains open to other karate styles and interpretations. Based in Hamburg, GIMA-HA welcomes newcomers to take part in a free trial training session.

Its website introduces the association’s history and philosophy and provides contact information, downloadable examination regulations and exam registration forms. Visitors can also find updates, photos and videos through its Facebook page, along with a travel account about a member’s first visit to Japan.
