About Girl Child Concerns
Girl Child Concerns (GCC) is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to the upliftment of youth, specifically girls, through enhanced educational opportunities. Established in 2003, GCC aims to bridge the gender gap in girls' enrollment, particularly in the northern region of Nigeria. With offices in Abuja, Kaduna, and Maiduguri, this organization has made significant strides in improving the lives of girls and women in the country.
GCC's interventions not only provide access to education for young girls but also raise awareness about their reproductive health, rights, entitlements, and responsibilities. The organization collaborates with legislative bodies, religious and traditional leaders, communities, and institutions to achieve its objectives. GCC offers holistic interventions that cater to vulnerable adolescent girls, including those from rural areas, disadvantaged backgrounds, and girls in humanitarian settings.
Their specific initiatives encompass reproductive health and rights, scholarships for vulnerable girls, advocacy, community mobilization, sensitization on civil rights and responsibilities, as well as gender equity. By empowering and promoting girl child education, GCC provides educational support through programs like the Female Students Scholarships Scheme (FSSS), safe spaces, and life skills development. Their comprehensive approach ensures that girls not only receive formal education but also acquire important life skills and knowledge about sexuality, ultimately delaying the age of marriage.
To date, over 200 girls have graduated from secondary school under the scholarship scheme, and currently, almost 300 girls are enrolled in various girls' boarding schools across four states in northern Nigeria. GCC's mission is to provide young people with the opportunities they need to reach their highest potential. Their vision is to create a society where every young person can develop to their fullest potential, regardless of race, gender, or religion.
The organization's goal is to offer young girls the chance to pursue education at the highest level without financial constraints. Objectives include increasing girls' enrollment, retention, and completion of secondary education, raising community awareness and sustaining interest in girls' education, building girls' confidence and empowering them to be responsible members of society, reducing early marriage, improving the reproductive health of young people, and addressing the specific needs of married adolescents. GCC believes in the power of partnerships and collaborative efforts to effect change for children.
They have a successful history of partnering with multinational corporations and national companies that share their commitment to children. Together with its partners, GCC identifies, designs, and implements initiatives that benefit both parties. For those interested in supporting Girl Child Concerns, the organization can be contacted through their offices in Abuja, Kaduna, and Maiduguri.
