Friends of Githima Special School

The Githima Project is a community-focused initiative in Mukarara, Nyeri County, Kenya, advocating for children with physical, mental, and developmental disabilities. Its mission is to promote inclusion and equal access to education, care, and community resources, while nurturing each child’s dignity, agency, and independence. Working with caregivers, Githima develops individualized support plans and helps families access specialized education, essential medication, durable medical equipment, and healthy meals.

A central goal is Githima Special School, a secure campus intended to protect children from stigma, isolation, and victimization. The project has secured land, completed a perimeter wall and entrance gate, and brought water and electricity to the site. Plans for classrooms, dormitories, therapy and medical spaces, a kitchen, and staff housing have been designed and approved; construction of the permanent campus awaits the next funding phase.

Githima also builds community awareness and support through charity walks, fundraising, youth mental-health activities, medical screening camps, and partnerships. Individuals can contribute by donating, volunteering, partnering, sharing the mission, or purchasing merchandise.
