About GLFC
GLFC, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, is a brand dedicated to protecting and sustaining the Great Lakes fishery, a binational treasure valued at over $7 billion annually. This valuable fishery attracts millions of anglers, supports commercial and charter fishing, and is crucial to the environment. The commission was established through the 1954 Convention on Great Lakes Fisheries as a mechanism for cross-border cooperation between Canada and the United States.
Recognizing that fishery resources do not adhere to political boundaries, the commission facilitates continuous binational collaboration for effective fishery management. Sea lampreys, a destructive invasive species, played a significant role in the creation of the commission. By developing a comprehensive sea lamprey control program and conducting research to sustain fish stocks, the GLFC ensures the preservation of the Great Lakes fishery.
The commission works closely with various government agencies, research institutions, and advisory committees to achieve its goals. With its commitment to science, collaboration, and sustainable management, GLFC is instrumental in the preservation of this vital natural resource
