The Global Food Research Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a project of the Carolina Population Center. Our team collaborates with diverse partners around the world to carefully evaluate food and nutrition policies and to develop in-depth, longitudinal research on large-scale obesity prevention efforts. Our mission is to provide the academic community, policymakers, and industry with rigorous and innovative methods to measure the influence of industry (factory-to-fork dynamics) on food supply trends across the globe. Ultimately, our work is aimed at reducing diet-related disparities in health and preventing obesity and other diet-related diseases by contributing to the creation of a more healthful food system and food environment.

About Global Food Research Program at UNC-Chapel Hill
The Global Food Research Program (GFRP) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is dedicated to advancing comprehensive food and nutrition research to combat diet-related disparities and promote healthier food systems. Initially rooted in decades of foundational research led by Barry Popkin, the GFRP collaborates with global partners to evaluate food policies, such as fiscal measures, marketing regulations, and school food environments. With an interdisciplinary team of over 40 experts, including epidemiologists, economists, and nutritionists, GFRP conducts in-depth studies to analyze the impact of industry dynamics on food supply trends.
Key projects include longitudinal research on obesity prevention and assessments of national-level health policies, such as Mexico's sugary drink taxes and the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation's initiatives. Funded by organizations like Bloomberg Philanthropies, GFRP also pursues innovative policy evaluations aiming to enhance food environments and reduce non-communicable diseases worldwide. Their research resources and collaborative efforts strive to create a healthier future for communities across the globe.
