About Global Forest Coalition
The Global Forest Coalition (GFC) is an international coalition of 126 NGOs and Indigenous Peoples' Organizations (IPOs) dedicated to defending social justice and the rights of forest peoples in forest policies. Founded in 2000 by 19 NGOs and IPOs from around the world, the GFC participates in international forest policy meetings and organizes joint advocacy campaigns. Their mission is to advocate for the conservation and restoration of forest ecosystems, ensuring respect for the rights, territories, traditional knowledge, and sustainable livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and women.
Their vision is to protect real forests and the people dependent on them, promoting sustainable co-existence with Indigenous Peoples and local communities. The GFC also aims to protect the rights of forest peoples, halt deforestation and biodiversity loss, and emphasize the cultural diversity and traditional knowledge of Indigenous Peoples in biodiversity conservation. Through their various objectives, the GFC strives to combat the causes of deforestation, advocate for the rights of marginalized groups, and promote community-led conservation initiatives
