UNESCO Global Geoparks are areas of significant geological importance that are managed with a comprehensive approach to protection, education, and sustainable development. By leveraging their geological heritage alongside the natural and cultural aspects of the region, these geoparks aim to raise awareness about key societal issues, climate change, and natural disaster mitigation. Through the Global Geoparks Network (GGN), UNESCO supports local communities in establishing innovative enterprises, creating jobs, and offering high-quality training in sustainable geotourism.
Since 2004, the GGN has grown to encompass 169 sites in 44 countries, fostering global cooperation and knowledge exchange. The 2015 UNESCO General Conference established the UNESCO Global Geoparks label to recognize and manage exceptional geological sites holistically. The UNESCO continues to encourage the establishment of Global Geoparks worldwide, particularly in developing regions, in collaboration with the GGN
