GLOBE at Night

Globe at Night is an international citizen-science campaign that raises awareness of light pollution and its effects on the night sky. It invites people around the world to observe how bright the sky appears and submit measurements, helping build a shared record of night-sky conditions. The campaign is a program of NSF’s NOIRLab, the U.S. national center for ground-based nighttime optical and infrared astronomy, managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.

Globe at Night provides practical resources to help participants identify constellations, compare what they see with star charts, and report observations. Its reporting web app supports smartphones, tablets, and computers and is available in 28 languages. Activity guides, postcards, educational materials, and information on light pollution are also offered in multiple languages. Participants can explore interactive maps and data, compare regions and years, and take part in scheduled observing campaigns. The project welcomes observations from both hemispheres and encourages people to contribute to its annual data goals.
