About Gender Monitoring Office
Gender Monitoring Office (GMO) is a critical institution in Rwanda dedicated to promoting gender equality and fighting against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and related injustices. Established by the Government of Rwanda through the Constitution in 2023, GMO is mandated to monitor and ensure the respect of gender equality principles across all sectors. Affiliated with the Office of the Prime Minister, GMO plays a pivotal role in monitoring compliance with national, regional, and international gender-related commitments.
GMO's key responsibilities include monitoring gender commitments, advocating for gender equality, and conducting research to support gender mainstreaming efforts. The office also has the power to identify gender-related violations, provide opinions on draft laws, and receive complaints of GBV for necessary action. Comprising the High Monitoring Council, Executive Secretariat, and Consultative Committee, GMO operates with a clear vision to uphold gender accountability for inclusive sustainable development in Rwanda. For information and support related to gender equality and GBV, GMO is a vital resource in Rwanda's journey towards gender equality.
