About GMRT
Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT) is a comprehensive initiative dedicated to synthesizing high-quality elevation data from the world's oceans. Established originally in 1992 as the Ridge Multibeam Synthesis, GMRT compiles edited multibeam sonar data collected by scientists and institutions globally. This extensive dataset is meticulously processed and gridded by the GMRT Team, resulting in a continually updated compilation of global bathymetric data.
With more than 40 million square kilometers of curated data from 1,490 cruises, the latest release (v4. 2. 1) highlights GMRT's commitment to providing precise oceanic topography.
The GMRT tools, including the GMRT MapTool, allow users to create custom maps and grids, with options for polar projections now available. Besides its availability in platforms like Google Earth and the GEBCO compilation, GMRT serves as an essential resource for researchers and educators alike. Backed by the US National Science Foundation, GMRT is hosted at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, ensuring reliability and accessibility for a broad audience
