The Canadian Goat Society (CGS), established on August 3, 1917, plays a vital role in the promotion and management of goat breeding in Canada. Governed by the Animal Pedigree Act, CGS is dedicated to maintaining the integrity of its herdbooks, which include nine purebred goat breeds: Alpine, Angora, La Mancha, Nigerian Dwarf, Nubian, Oberhasli, Pygmy, Saanen, and Toggenburg. The organization provides a range of services to breeders, including performance evaluation programs, a Classification Program, and a Judges Licensing Program.
CGS also oversees sanctioned shows and a Master Breeder Award, fostering excellence within the goat breeding community. Furthermore, to ensure accurate record-keeping, they collaborate with the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC) for registration and membership inquiries. The society is managed by an elected Board of Directors representing six districts across Canada, and they actively promote the responsible and humane treatment of goats while providing valuable resources and publications for their members
