About USGPO
The United States Government Publishing Office, commonly known as USGPO, is an agency of the federal government responsible for producing, publishing, and distributing official and authentic federal government publications and information products. Its mission is to keep Americans informed about their government and to support the democratic process. The history of USGPO dates back to 1813 when the Congress authorized the establishment of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Documents.
Over the years, it has evolved and undergone various name changes. In 1860, it became the Government Printing Office (GPO), and in 2014, it was renamed the Government Publishing Office to better reflect its digital publishing capabilities. The headquarters of USGPO is located in Washington, D.
C., United States. It occupies a prominent building at 732 North Capitol Street. USGPO's main products and services include the production and distribution of print and digital documents such as congressional publications, passports, secure credentials, books, journals, and other official government publications.
It also operates the Federal Depository Library Program, which provides public access to government information. On a global scale, USGPO has established partnerships and joint ventures with various agencies and organizations. One notable partnership is with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to digitally preserve and provide access to historic government publications.
It also collaborates with international partners to exchange information and expertise in the publishing field. USGPO holds a strong market position as the official printer and provider of government publications in the United States. It faces competition from private publishers and other governmental entities, but its long-standing reputation and authoritative role give it a competitive edge.
In recent years, USGPO has embraced digital technologies, transitioning from traditional print-based publishing to a more digital-centric approach. This shift has allowed for greater accessibility and outreach to a wider audience. Additionally, it has expanded its product lineup to include e-books, mobile applications, and interactive publications, adapting to the changing needs of its users.
As of the latest available information, USGPO continues to be a vital resource for government publications, providing access to information for citizens, researchers, and libraries across the United States. It has remained committed to its mission of serving as the official publisher of the federal government
