GR-IX, the Greek Internet Exchange, is a neutral, independent platform that helps networks exchange Internet traffic directly and supports the growth of the Internet in Greece. Owned by the National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET), a non-profit, state-owned company, GR-IX serves as critical national Internet infrastructure, connecting internet service providers, content and cloud providers, and other major network operators. Founded in 2009, it succeeded the Athens Internet Exchange, established in 1999.
By enabling direct peering among members, GR-IX can help reduce telecommunications costs, improve routing efficiency, and increase network speed and capacity. Its services are designed to support stable, flexible connectivity, with potential benefits including lower delay, jitter and packet loss, and greater resilience during outages or DDoS attacks. GR-IX operates points of presence in Athens and Thessaloniki and offers connection options, including remote connection, as well as route servers and technical resources. Members can also use tools such as a peering matrix, looking glass, traffic statistics and network-monitoring graphs.
