About The Wildlife Trusts
The Great Fen is a vital ecological landscape situated between Peterborough and Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. This expansive nature recovery project aims to restore and connect over 14 square miles of unique fenland habitats, thereby enhancing the biodiversity of the area. Home to two National Nature Reserves, Woodwalton Fen and Holme Fen, it offers a sanctuary for rare wildlife species such as bitterns and otters, as well as countless amphibians, birds, and flowering plants unique to the region.
The Great Fen project, initiated in 2001 by five organizations, emphasizes sustainable farming and habitat restoration to combat peat loss and carbon emissions. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including guided wildlife walks, educational programs, and community events at the Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre. With an extensive network of trails for walking, cycling, and horseback riding, the Great Fen invites everyone to reconnect with nature while preserving the area's rich environmental heritage for future generations.
