About American Great Lakes Ports Association
The American Great Lakes Ports Association (AGLPA) is a renowned organization representing commercial ports and port users on the United States side of the Great Lakes. Founded in 1977, the AGLPA aims to foster maritime commerce and create employment opportunities in the Great Lakes region by influencing public policies. With a common voice, the association educates policymakers, media, and the general public about the vital role of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway shipping in the region's economy.
Initially formed in the late 1970s to secure a larger portion of annual U.S. Department of Agriculture Public Law 480 food-aid shipments, the coalition continued to grow and expand its agenda. Today, the AGLPA consists of public entities responsible for promoting maritime commerce and economic development, with additional non-voting "associate members" from other organizations or companies. The association's offices in Washington, DC, are led by an Executive Director who oversees day-to-day activities.
