Great River Race

The Great River Race is London's premier River Marathon, offering an exciting 21.6-mile boat race from Millwall to Richmond. Established in 1988, it has grown from a small gathering of 61 boats to an international event with nearly 300 crews competing annually, including participants from America, Australia, and various European countries. This unique race showcases a variety of 'fixed seat' boats, including traditional Thames Watermen’s Cutters, and promotes competition for all skill levels—from seasoned athletes striving for personal bests to casual participants enjoying a fun day out.

The event not only emphasizes athletic prowess but also embraces charity, fancy dress, and camaraderie. It welcomes diverse competitors, including adults, juniors, and disabled participants, with various categories ensuring everyone can join in the festivities. The Great River Race is supported by the Thames Festival Trust and operates as a charitable trust run by volunteers, awarding 37 trophies to the best crews.
