About Green-Wood
Green-Wood is a historic landmark and living cemetery located in New York City, founded in 1838. As one of America’s first rural cemeteries, it encompasses 478 acres of breathtaking hills, valleys, and glacial ponds, featuring a remarkable collection of 19th and 20th-century statuary and mausoleums. With a rich history, Green-Wood attracts around 500,000 visitors annually and has been a source of inspiration for the creation of public parks in the city.
Among its 580,000 permanent residents are notable figures such as Leonard Bernstein and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Green-Wood also serves as a vital cultural resource, offering educational programs, private tours, and seasonal events aimed at engaging the community. The Green-Wood Historic Fund, established in 1999, is dedicated to preserving the cemetery’s architectural and cultural significance while promoting public appreciation through various art installations and historical education initiatives.
As a National Historic Landmark, Green-Wood stands as a testament to New York City’s rich heritage and artistic legacy
