Green Freeport is a collaborative initiative between various organizations, including the Port of Cromarty Firth and Global Energy Group, aimed at establishing a Green Freeport in the Highlands of Inverness and Cromarty Firth. The main objective of this partnership is to maximize the local benefits derived from a range of renewable energy projects. By doing so, they aim to create business opportunities, generate employment, attract inward investment, and position the Highlands as a key player in the country's transition to a net-zero economy.

The creation of the Green Free Port is part of the UK Government's post-Brexit economic growth strategy, with plans to establish up to 10 Free Ports across the UK. These Free Trade Zones will have unique operational, regulatory, and customs rules and will play a crucial role in promoting international trade, investment, regeneration, and innovation. The focus will be on advanced manufacturing of low carbon technologies, including offshore wind, oil and gas decarbonization, and hydrogen production.

The Cromarty Firth, with its rich industrial history and expertise in supporting North Sea oil and gas activities, is an ideal location for establishing a free trade zone. The area boasts a skilled workforce, first-class port infrastructure, and manufacturing facilities that have received substantial investments in recent years. By creating a free trade zone in this region, Green Freeport aims to support the development of low carbon technologies, secure a sustainable pipeline of supply chain opportunities, and bring significant regeneration to the Scottish Highlands
