Green Historical Society | Green OH

Green Historical Society is a brand that aims to bring together individuals interested in history, particularly the history of Green, Ohio. They believe that comprehending the history of their community is fundamental to their democratic way of life, fosters a deeper understanding of their state and nation, and encourages a greater appreciation of their American heritage. One of their notable projects is the Klinefelter Cemetery Mapping Project.

In this endeavor, 40 Green High School students, members of the Green Historical Society, and City of Green staff collaborated with Dr. Timothy Matney, an archaeology professor from the University of Akron, and Jerrad Lancaster, a Senior Lecturer from the Archaeology Department of UA. The students were introduced to various techniques, such as utilizing an electrical resistivity meter and surveying total station theodolite, to accurately measure and document the grave stones' exact positions.

Mr. Lancaster also demonstrated the use of a drone equipped with GIS mapping equipment to create a 3D model of the cemetery. The project's purpose is to ascertain the cemetery's boundaries so that the city can proceed with plans to honor the space with suitable fencing and signage.

Over 4000 data points were captured during the two-day event, and future plans include returning to complete the outer perimeter of the site with additional equipment to reveal what lies beneath. Dr. Matney and Jerrad Lancaster will continue to collaborate with students and historical society members as they teach and further map the cemetery in this multi-year project
