Grieving Students

The Coalition to Support Grieving Students is a collaborative initiative bringing together leading professional organizations and school professionals who share a commitment to supporting students after a death or other loss. Its members represent educators, school leaders, student support personnel, and other professionals, reflecting the coalition’s focus on making care for grieving students a shared responsibility across the school community.

The coalition provides free, practical resources to help schools respond with compassion and confidence. Its materials include expert-led video training, guidance on talking with children about grief, advice on what to say and what to avoid, and strategies for supporting students and staff over time. Resources also address developmental and cultural considerations, family communication, peer support, grief’s effects on learning, and topics such as suicide, school crises, memorials, and potentially life-limiting conditions. The site offers guides, family materials, articles, additional learning modules, and information about continuing medical education credits. Schools, districts, and nonprofit organizations can use these resources to build grief-sensitive practices, prepare for loss, and support students and staff through difficult transitions.
