Grooming Alliance of Spearfish (GAS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to grooming fatbike singletrack in the national forest surrounding Spearfish, South Dakota. Its work supports access to winter trails in the Northern Black Hills, helping riders enjoy the area’s snowy outdoor routes. GAS is not directly affiliated with Black Hills Trails, the Nordic Ski Club, or any bike shop.
The group began trail grooming in 2017, initially focusing on Higgins Gulch with a Snowdog lent by the Forest Service. In 2018, two Forest Service–provided Yamaha Phazer snowmobiles expanded its ability to prepare trails in the Iron Creek and Red Lake areas. The machines help break down deep snow before it is packed, making it possible to groom more miles of singletrack.
GAS shares trail conditions, maps, news, events, and information about its projects. It also invites community members to get involved through volunteering and donations, including support for its GoFundMe. The organization acknowledges the local volunteers and Forest Service partners who have helped build and maintain the trail system.
