The Große Koblenzer Karnevalsgesellschaft, known as the “Gruuße,” is a carnival society in Koblenz with a history dating back to 1847. It celebrates local carnival traditions while welcoming members of all ages and embracing a diverse, intergenerational community. The society is especially visible in the Rose Monday parade, where its guard groups appear in traditional blue artillery and red infantry uniforms.
Its members include children’s and youth guards, a senior dance guard, a women’s guard, and the Kanoniere, who carry a confetti cannon. The Hotzels-Famillisch, inspired by a large family from Lützel in the 1920s, is another distinctive part of the society. Performers also include dance groups, soloists, a men’s ballet, and show dance groups. The Gruuße hosts formal carnival sessions and supports events such as the Königsbacher Old Town Festival and the Koblenz children’s and youth session. Its activities also include a festive carnival service on Carnival Sunday. People interested in joining can become members and take part in the society’s celebrations and traditions.
