The Grottes de Sare are a prehistoric cave and heritage attraction in Sare, in France’s Basque Country. Located in the village of Sare, the site is about 10 kilometres from the La Rhune railway and 30 minutes from the Basque coast. Visitors can explore the Lezea cave on a guided sound-and-light tour, discovering its distinctive geology, natural environment and evidence of prehistoric life.
The experience also introduces Basque mythology and ideas about the origins of the Basque people, including perspectives associated with scholar José Miguel de Barandiaran. The site includes a museum and a megalithic park, offering further ways to explore the region’s history and culture. Guided visits are available in French, Basque, Spanish and English, and the attraction welcomes individuals, families, school groups and other visitors.
Access is partly adapted for people with reduced mobility and for visitors with hearing impairments. Facilities include free parking, a seasonal bar and light refreshments, a shaded picnic area and marked walking routes. The caves also host cultural events and activities
