Lekskolan Gryningen is a private, Steiner-inspired early childhood centre in Östersundom, Helsinki. Established in 1994, it welcomes a small mixed-age group of 14 children aged two to seven into a warm, homelike setting at Krogars Gård, surrounded by forests and fields. The centre is open five days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and offers preschool activities when possible.

Gryningen’s approach combines clear routines with freedom for play and exploration. Inspired by Steiner pedagogy, its educators emphasize imitation, storytelling, creativity, meaningful practical activities and the changing seasons. Children spend time outdoors, including regular forest outings, and take part in baking, painting, singing and celebrations throughout the year. The centre prepares its own ecological, vegetarian meals using locally sourced ingredients, and involves children in kitchen tasks and setting the table. Educators work closely with families to support children’s care and development. The parent association helps sustain the centre through volunteer activities, events and board governance.
