George Town and District Historical Society Inc. is a community organisation dedicated to fostering interest in and understanding of the history of George Town and the surrounding district in northern Tasmania. Formed in 1997, the Society has built a substantial collection of printed material, images, oral histories, databases and other records, most of which are held at the Low Head Pilot Station Maritime Museum. It also supports the museum and can assist people researching family history; appointments are recommended.
The Society brings local heritage to life through monthly meetings, forums, guest speakers, excursions, history walks, community displays and conferences. Its activities also include recording oral histories, researching the region’s past, and participating in events with other historical groups. The Society produces books, booklets, conference papers and regular newsletters featuring historical articles and updates on its work.
George Town, first settled in 1804, has served as a regional headquarters, holiday destination, fishing village and industrial town.
