The Southern Shark Industry Alliance (SSIA) represents members who rely on the sustainable harvesting of the Southern Shark Fishery, a major Australian fishery that began in 1927. The Alliance promotes ethical, professional representation to communities and fisheries management agencies, and works to build awareness of the fishery and its products. Gummy shark is now the fishery’s primary target species and is the traditional “flake” commonly served in fish and chips.
According to the information provided by SSIA, gummy shark is not overfished and is an affordable, popular Australian food resource harvested from southern and eastern Australian Commonwealth waters. The Alliance supports research and improvement across the sector, including fishing gear trials and investigations into new technologies. It also promotes a Professional Fishers Code of Conduct intended to strengthen ecological sustainability, consistency and accountability.
Through its website, SSIA shares information about gummy shark, stock levels, fishery status and related research, alongside news and updates about seafood naming and public discussion of the fishery
