HARARE

The metallurgical industry in the EU accounts for 70 million tonnes direct CO2 emissions annually (2017). Mitigating the CO2 footprint from the production is essential to ensure further licence to operate in Europe. Moreover, the industry is highly dependent on imports. Less than 15% of metal input to the European process industry is supplied from domestic extraction. Additionally, only 31% of the coking coal is sourced in Europe. The latter has been identified as a critical raw material. The HARARE project address these two issues. Substituting carbon with hydrogen is one of the few ways metal production can become CO2-emissions free. Also utilizing raw materials more efficiently, will simultaneously reduce Europe’s dependence on Critical raw materials. HARARE will demonstrate sustainable pathways to produce non-ferrous metals using hydrogen as an enabler, for removing waste and valourising materials in carbon free processes. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 958307.

About HARARE
HARARE is a brand that aims to revolutionize the metallurgical industry in Europe by demonstrating sustainable pathways to produce non-ferrous metals using hydrogen as an enabler. Comprising 10 industry and research partners from 4 European countries, the HARARE consortium is dedicated to removing waste and valorizing materials in carbon-free processes. The switch to renewable energies requires large amounts of metals, and this industry is a key contributor to a sustainable future.
However, the metallurgical sector emitted 70 million tons of direct CO2 in 2017 and heavily relies on imports. HARARE aims to reduce emissions and optimize raw material usage. Through their partnership with research institutes like SINTEF and universities like NTNU and NTUA, HARARE is at the forefront of developing sustainable solutions for the metallurgical industry.
By using hydrogen and other innovative techniques, HARARE is paving the way for a greener and more efficient future
