Helmsley Archaeological & Historical Society is a registered charity dedicated to exploring and recording the archaeology and history of Helmsley and the surrounding area. Founded in 1950 as a local group of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, it brings people together for talks, discussions, research and visits, with a particular focus on local history. Its programme includes presentations on subjects ranging from medieval glass and Helmsley Castle to the history of Duncombe Park Estate and the archaeology of trade, urban life and disease.
The Society also supports projects and activities that investigate the area’s past and help share new research. Its biennial publication, The Ryedale Historian, has provided a forum for members to publish archaeological and historical findings since 1965. Earlier work by members contributed to The History of Helmsley, Rievaulx and District, published in 1963. Through its events, publications, resources and membership, the Society encourages local learning and preserves knowledge of the region’s heritage. Its annual general meeting takes place at the April meeting.
