Halliwell Local History Society is a community organisation formed in 1986 to record, preserve and share the history of Halliwell Township in Bolton. Building on the research, photographs and maps collected by its first chairman, local historian Derek Billington, the Society maintains an archive that supports its publications, displays and community activities. It has more than 50 regular members, as well as members elsewhere in the UK and around the world who receive its bi-monthly magazine, The Little Piecer.
The Society meets on the last Tuesday of each month at St. Peter’s Parish Centre, 347 Church Road, Bolton, and welcomes visitors as well as members. Meetings feature talks and refreshments, with books available for sale. Its activities also include reminiscence groups, a local history fair held approximately every two years, and support for events organised by schools, libraries and other local bodies. The Society publishes books on Halliwell’s people, places and past, and offers CDs.
