About HanziFinder
HanziFinder is a Chinese-character research and search platform that helps users explore how characters are built. Its tools allow searches across more than 88,000 characters and 1,365 structures using substructures, rather than limiting users to predefined radicals. Visitors can look up a character or search by English or Chinese keywords to find information such as Unicode, pinyin, definitions, and etymology, or browse popular substructures.
The platform was created by Jennifer Ball and Xu Chao, who developed a structural model and search algorithms for representing Chinese characters. HanziFinder also supports research into patterns in Chinese writing, including studies that use substructure searches to examine groups of characters and possible connections between their forms and meanings. Its work is described in a patent covering systems and methods for representing and searching characters.
Related projects and resources include CuneiFinder, a substructure search engine for cuneiform signs, and research on the origins of writing systems. HanziFinder serves learners, researchers, and anyone curious about the structure and history of Chinese characters.
