Harbour City Shotokan Karate is a traditional karate school based in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Its training follows the Shotokan tradition established by Gichin Funakoshi and emphasizes character development, discipline, respect and dedication. The school presents karate not only as a martial art, but also as a practice in which consistent, diligent training helps students develop personally.
The school offers youth classes for ages 8 to 15 and adult classes for people aged 16 and over. Youth training supports leadership, focus, confidence, fitness and self-defence skills, while adult instruction is tailored to each student’s ability and offers physical and mental exercise. Across its programs, students practise kihon, the fundamentals of techniques and movement; kata, sequences performed against imaginary opponents; and kumite, sparring that applies techniques with partners. Training includes blocking, punching, striking and kicking, with control and respect stressed throughout. The school also provides information about schedules, grading, instructors and black belts, and invites prospective students to get in touch to begin training.
