About Harrison Centre
The Harrison Centre for Social Mobility is an organisation focused on helping children and young people improve their education, skills and employment prospects. Inspired by the practical philanthropy of the Industrial Revolution, it supports initiatives that its founder, Sir David Harrison, believes can make a meaningful difference to social mobility. Its vision is to be innovative and pioneering, seeking better ways to address entrenched barriers to opportunity.
The organisation operates six centres in Sunderland, Newcastle, Darlington, Blyth, Antigua and through the Open University. These centres provide support, guidance, education and training, with programmes designed to build confidence, develop qualifications and strengthen employability. Examples include Back on Track and Back in the Game, which help participants gain skills and move towards further learning or work. The centres also offer opportunities for young people to explore technology and develop ideas through initiatives such as the Harrison Challenge and Harrison Prize.
The Harrison Centre reports that more than 2,000 young people benefit from its centres each year, and that over ยฃ6 million has been invested in education and training since 2017.
