The Harte Research Institute (HRI) at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi is an interdisciplinary center dedicated to the long-term sustainable use and conservation of the Gulf. Bringing together marine scientists and specialists in policy, law, social sciences, and economics, HRI works across disciplines and national borders to develop science-driven solutions for shared Gulf challenges. Its research spans nine groups and addresses issues such as coastal water quality, habitat resilience, wildlife ecology, fisheries, and the relationship between healthy ecosystems and sustainable economies.
HRI’s work includes collaborative projects, research publications, data resources, educational programs, and opportunities for prospective students to become future Gulf leaders. Examples of featured projects include improving resilience and habitat in the Baffin Bay watershed, studying disturbance affecting reddish egrets along the Texas coast, and assessing strategies to improve post-release survival of red snapper. The institute also engages communities through events such as Sink Your Shucks, an oyster reef restoration initiative, and shares research through news, resources, and The Gulf Stream podcast.
