About Haseloff Lab
Haseloff Lab is an academic research resource associated with Professor Jim Haseloff and the University of Cambridge. Although the laboratory has closed following his retirement, its website preserves research, publications, teaching materials and practical resources. The lab’s work applies synthetic biology and engineering principles to plant science, using reusable genetic components and quantitative models to control gene expression and study plant growth.
A central focus is Marchantia polymorpha, a liverwort valued as a model for its simple genome, haploid genetics, rapid growth and regeneration, and accessible development. Research and resources cover plant transformation, gene regulation, cell imaging, microscopy, bioinstrumentation, software and experimental methods, alongside image collections and educational materials. The site also documents publications and past iGEM projects.
The work now places greater emphasis on practical, affordable biological construction. Linked initiatives offer instructions for modular, do-it-yourself hydroponic systems and tools for advanced bioinstrumentation, including no-code programming, AirFlow DNA amplification and DIY biolistics. These materials support researchers, educators and makers interested in accessible plant engineering and synthetic biology
