Hawakal Publishers is an independent publishing house established in Kolkata in 2008. Founded by writer and photographer Bitann Chakraborty, the press began as a predominantly Bengali poetry imprint and gradually expanded into Bengali fiction and nonfiction. In 2015, it released its first English-language book and has since built a catalogue of acclaimed titles in both languages.
Hawakal works with emerging and established writers and poets from around the world, bringing together varied literary voices and subjects. Its books include poetry collections, novels, short stories, memoirs, spiritual works, literary criticism, and books on art and cinema. Titles such as Tea and Tombs: Poems on Hyderabad, Yasodhara: A Novel, and Ashok Kumar: Atma-Katha O Bombay Talkies illustrate the range of its publishing programme.
